Our whole team had worked together to create our lovely patient Joanna’s new smile!
Joanna was after an even, whiter and gap free smile. She was truly committed to achieve this going ahead with crowns, veneers, a bridge, an implant and whitening!
Hard work really does pay off, look at that after!
Congratulations Joanna on finishing your dream smile journey.
The answer is no. Tooth whitening does not damage your teeth.
Its all a myth. If performed correctly by a dental professional or using at home products as instructed by your dentist it is considered safe.
Here’s why teeth whitening doesn’t harm your teeth:
1. Removal of surface stains: whitening agents work to break down and remove stains such as tea, coffee, red wine, tobacco and certain foods.
2. Temporary tooth sensitivity: One of the most common side effects. Whitening briefly opens the pores in the enamel allowing bleaching agents to penetrate, although this goes away after a short period.
3. Proper application: follow instructions and recommendations from your dentist.
And that’s only a few! We wouldn’t recommend something if it was unsafe for your teeth.
Clinical studies have shown that teeth whitening with carbamide or hydrogen peroxide is safe if performed by a professional dentist.
It is normal to experience sensitivity from whitening your teeth. However this is short term and will subside quickly and does not lead to tooth or gums problems.

1. Teeth whitening does not cause damage & is the less invasive option when it comes to changing the colour of your teeth! Our teeth are porous like sponges , the whitening agent absorbs through the enamel removing stains & lightening the second layer of the tooth, the dentin layer.
2. Professional whitening solutions sold by your dentist are typically stronger then those over the counter kits! Most supermarket kits only do a good job at removing surface stains, meaning that shiny smile won’t’ last long!
3. As whitening agents only work on natural enamel & dentine they are unable to whitening any artificial dental work.
4. While most whitening is similar the difference is the device that is used on the teeth. A truly custom-fitted whitening tray ensures that every angle of every tooth (regardless of whether your teeth are straight or not) receives even and consistent coverage. Unlike boil & bit trays, whitening strips & generic whitening trays.
5. Before bed, why? This is because after whitening the pores in your teeth are more enlarged meaning they are more exposed to re-staining. This means your teeth have the chance to rehydrate & remineralise over night.
6. Temporary teeth sensitivity is completely normal after whitening & can be treated by using a sensitive toothpaste. If using a take home whitening kit we recommend whitening every 2nd or 3rd day instead!

Here at Berwick Dental Studio we absolutely love teaching your children the importance of good dental hygiene & healthy habits!
Did you know your child is due for their first check up as soon as they get their very first tooth!
Often parents start bringing their kids to the dentist once they reach around 2 however, before this age the baby teeth are at their most fragile stage while developing.
Sleeping with a milk bottle is a huge contributor to decay in baby teeth. This is due to sugary liquids pooling around the teeth sitting there for 8+ hours.
We recommend that your child drinks water after consuming any sugary drinks!
